Whidby-Island-Workshop.jpg

This October 2-5, 2016, join the Leica Akademie and photographer Anna Mia Davidson as we explore visual storytelling off the coast of Seattle on Whidby Island, WA.

Designed for the photographer with an interest in environmental portraiture, food, landscape and travel photography, this intimate program provides the perfect setting to push yourself creatively in a location that inspires you to discover your point of view as a photographer.

Workshop participants will experience all that Whidbey Island has to offer. From stunning sunsets and quaint towns, access to organic farms, wineries, cheese makers and fisherman that make this both a photography and food lovers destination.

Great accommodations and a unforgettable location will provide an opportunity to leave everyday life behind and fully immerse in the learning process. The renowned Saratoga Inn will be our home base for three days, as we explore visually all that makes this a unique island retreat.

The schedule will combine formal lectures, group excursions, as well as time to photograph on your own.

Participants will gain insight into Anna's approach to creating projects and capturing moments, while receiving hands on instruction in the field. Anna will share the story and editing process behind her two books, Human Nature: Sustainable Farming in the Pacific Northwest and Cuba Black and White.

This workshop is ideal for photographers with an interest in documenting a place and it's people. Whether you want to tell a story in one frame, become more confident photographing people on location, create a travel story or discover the process of building a long term documentary project, this 3-day workshop can give you the building blocks and feedback you need to develop as a photographer.

Topics Covered include:

  • Composition, light and capturing moments

  • Developing personal projects

  • Picture Story vs. Photo Essays

  • Environmental Portraits

  • Gaining Access / Model releases

  • Strategies for editing and processing

  • One on one and group critique
