Leica in the Landscape – Big Sur: Apr 30 - May 4

Bit-Sur.jpg

Visit The Big Sur Coast where California’s rugged cliffs collide with the pounding Pacific, and experience what Morley Baer described as “The Wilder Shore”.  This landscape photography workshop offers 4 days and 4 nights of expert photography instruction, unique locations, insight, and relaxing accommodations.

Throughout the workshop, guests will lodge at the beautiful Carmel Mission Inn. The inn is within minutes of Carmel and the Big Sur coast destinations. Schedules will emphasize the ever-changing early morning and late afternoon light. During the evening guests will relax at one of Carmel’s different restaurants and process images from the days work. Each day, instructors Michael Phaling and Tom Brichta will present simple photographic topics for students to explore.  Throughout the day instructors will offer individual feedback to expand students skills and insight.

End of day critiques will emphasize students discovering their own unique approach to document the landscape. One-half day will be reserved for an intense Lightroom session.

Daily field work will be spent exploring Pt Lobos, Pfieffer State Park, McWay Falls, Garrapata Beach, Pacific Grove, Bixby Bridge, and Whalers Cove along the coastal highway while chasing the light on the landscape.

During this workshop, we will find inspiration in the same landscape photographed by Ansel Adams, Brett and Edward Weston and Morley Baer, but, our mission is to discover your unique viewpoint…

Topics Covered include:

  • Light, Form, Color, Composition

  • Exposure Control, Dynamic Range, White Balance

  • Black and White Conversions

  • Seeing as the camera sees

  • Strategies for editing and processing in Lightroom

  • Finding your own creative path

Workshop philosophy and group size
This trip will be limited to 10 photographers. The objective of the Leica Akademie is to celebrate photography of all kinds through real-world shooting experiences that will help you discover your vision and point of view. We believe that people learn best in small groups outside of the classroom, where learning by doing and casual conversation, offer the biggest rewards.

This workshop is designed for anyone with an interest in any aspect of landscape photography. Photographers of all skill levels are welcome. Our small class size allows for tailoring to your needs. However all students should have a basic understanding of camera functions and operation before attending.Who should take this workshop?

It is not necessary to own a Leica to attend the workshop. Leica equipment will be available to try and test in the field.
