LHSA Announces the 2019 Photography Grant Recipient: Scott Brennan

LHSA – The International Leica Society is thrilled to announce that Scott Brennan is the recipient of this year’s Leica Society Photography Grant! The announcement was made during the Saturday Banquet at the Annual Meeting in Boston on October 19, 2019.

Scott will receive $5,000 to help complete a personal photographic project. In addition to the cash award, he will be featured in LHSA’s prestigious quarterly journal, Viewfinder, and will be considered for an exhibition at a Leica Store or Gallery in North America.

Scott Brennan is originally from New York and has lived in Mexico since 2010. He is currently dedicated to documenting the struggles of indigenous groups in Latin America and their ongoing fights to defend their territories and cultures.

A with a Master’s degree graduate in 2005 from The London College of Communication in photojournalism and documentary photography under Patrick Sutherland and Paul Lowe, Scott has freelanced for many publications, groups and organizations, including: The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Ground Truth Project, The BBC, Tlachinollan, CentroProhd, The Visual Anthropology Review and Amnesty International.

His ongoing project, Indigenous Autonomy and Resistance in Mexico focuses on three indigenous populations in Mexico that have ousted organized crime, corrupt politics, and violence from their ancestral homelands. By doing so, they have embarked upon indigenous cultural awakenings. As migrants from Central American nations and Mexico have dominated news cycles, this story of vulnerable populations staying on their ancestral homelands and successfully dealing, on a local level, with problems confronting the entire hemisphere, has yet to gain widespread attention. Below is a message from Scott and further down an example of his work.

LHSA wishes to thank our distinguished panel of jurors who judged the final phase of the selection process: Craig Semetko, Maggie Steber, Sara Terry, and Peter Turnley.
