We are all aware of how our photography succeeds or fails by lots of things and conditions beyond our control. As a young man and freelance photographer, I was always told to save for a rainy day. In March of 2020, my latest book “New Orleans Portrayed” was to launch. A full calendar on interviews, the book signing was suddenly canceled. This session will be about this and other events and images that will show you how to try and make the best of a once-in-a-lifetime event.

We photographers take a variety of pictures. But if you want to make photographs that lead you somewhere, whether it’s professionally or creating something that has more depth and meaning, a project is the answer. Focusing on one idea or story or place results in powerful photographs that give voice to your subjects, or shine a light on issues that keep you engaged with an end goal of making much more compelling photographs. It is the project that gets you to work as a photographer, have exhibitions, and ultimately makes you a more disciplined photographer who creates images of greater meaning and inner beauty.

8: 45 – 9:45 AM – The Editing Process from Idea to Execution: How to create better books, projects, shows and websites with Sandra Eisert
Sandra Eisert has worked in almost every visual format – evaluating millions of pictures, publishing over 6,000 picture projects and picture story/documentations, designing and/or editing well over 100 books, working with photographically dense websites, both massive and minor. And more. In this session, Sandra’s observations will help you make your work work better – and be more fulfilling and interesting to you too as as she also helps you better learn how to teach yourself.
9:45 AM – 10:45: Dias Eternos – Behind the Story and Process Documenting Women’s Prisons in Venezuela with Ana Maria Gosen
Ana María Arévalo Gosen in 2017 undertook a reckless project. She photographed women deprived of liberty held in Venezuela’s pretrial detention centers and prisons. Those establishments are anchored to bleak times of the early 20th century, when people were locked up in subhuman conditions. Anyone who thinks that only happened a hundred years ago is mistaken. For example, in 2015 Human Rights Watch ranked Venezuelan prisons among the most violent in Latin America. According to the Venezuelan Prison Observatory, there are prisons that cause fierce suffering to inmates and where women are in a very vulnerable situation. She is now continuing this work in El Salvador
